AS 3623 sets out the performance requirements, in terms of structural adequacy and serviceability, for the framing of domestic buildings of up to two storeys in height and roof pitches of up to 35°.
Alternative methods of assessing structural adequacy using either permissible stress or limit state methods are provided in Sections 2 and 3, respectively.
This Standard does not consider the effects of corrosion.

1.3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
1.3.1 Balcony—an external area. one or more metres above the ground.
1.3.2 Bearer—a sub-floor member supporting the floor joists.
1.3.3 Bracing—diagonal members or diaphragms which resist racking forces.
1.3.4 Ceiling batten—a member flxed to roof trusses or rafters to support ceiling sheeting.
1.3.5 Chord—the top and bottom members of a truss.
1.3.6 Floor joist—a member that directly supports the flooring.
1.3.7 Heel (knee)—thc connection between top and bottom truss chords.
1.3.8 Hold-down fixings—the fixings designed to resist wind forces.
1.3.9 Internal lining—the materials used for the face of internal walls or ceilings or the inner face of external walls.
1.3.10 Internal truss member (web)—a member spanning between the top and bottom chords of a roof truss.
1.3.11 Jamb stud—the stud located beside an opening in a wall frame, e.g. doorway.
1.3.12 Lintel—the horizontal stiffening member in a wall franie spanning an opening.
1.3.13 Load redistribution—the support offered to a loaded member by adjacent members carrying less load.
1.3.14 Noggin—a horizontal restraining member fixed into a wall frame to provide lateral and horizontal restraint to the studs.
1.3.15 Non-load-bearing walls—walls which are not required to carry gravity loads.
1.3.16 Plate—a member running across the top or bottom of a wall frame.
1.3.17 Racking—the force which could cause in-plane distortion of a framing module.
1.3.18 Roof or tile batten—a member fixed to roof trusses or rafters to support roof sheeting or tiles.
