4 Bio-based content and bio-based carbon content determination
4.1 General
A bio-based plastic is one which is wholly or partly derived from biomass. In particular when the product is partly bio-based, it is essential to quantify the amount of biomass (i.e. the bio-based carbon content and/or the bio-based content) of the product.
NOTE This document establishes a common basis for a verifiab’e declaration of the bio-based content of a plastic or plastics product. It does not contain requirements on the minimum bio-based content necessary in order to claim a plastic or plastics product as bio-based. Many different products with different characteristics and requirements can be made with plastics materials making it complex the definition of a common minimum value which is more relevant at product category level. However experts of CEN/TC249/WG 17 Biopolymers consider it a reasonable approach to not encourage “blo-based” claims on products or materials having a bio-based content lower than 25 % by total mass.
4.2 Bio-based carbon content
The bio-based carbon content of plastics and plastics products shall be determined according to EN 16640:2017 or to ISO 16620-2:2015, the latter on condition that the bio-based carbon content to be used for communication is calculated as described in EN 16640:20 17, 7.1.
4.3 Bio-based content
The bio-based content of plastics and plastics products shall be determined according to EN 16785-1:2015 or EN 16785-2 or ISO 16620-4.5 Sustainability aspects
The bio-based content of a product does not provide information on its sustainability. EN 16751 has been developed with the aim to identify sustainability aspects applicable to all blo-based products, covering all three pillars of sustainability (environmental, social and economic). EN 16751 sets horizontal sustainability criteria applicable to the blo-based content of bio-based plastics covering all three pillars of sustainability; environmental, social and economic aspects. lithe plastic only is partly bio-based, this document can only be used for the bio-based part since it does not address non-blobased (fossil, mineral) parts of a product.
NOTE 1 EN 16751 does not set any threshold for the sustainability indicators.
NOTE 2 EN 16848:2016, Annex A states that “information on aspects of biomass sustainability shall be provided according to EN 16751 or another relevant internationally recognized standard or certification system”. This opens the possibility to select standards which go beyond the minimum set of sustainability aspects covered in EN 16751. For example, the principles, criteria and indicators (PC&I) already well developed for biomass for energy applications (e.g. by ISO 13065) could be suitable for the communication purposes specified by this document as well.BS EN 17228 pdf download.
