1 SCOPE This Standard sets out test methods to assess the ignitability of material combinations such as covers and fillings used in upholstered seating, when subjected to as flame ignition sources greater than the match-flame equivalent source in AS/NZS 3744.2.
NOTE: The gas flame ignition sources in this Standard are referred to as Source 2 and Source 3 and are identical to those in BS 5852. Source I is the match-flame equivalent source given in AS3744.2.
2 OBJECTIVE The objective of this Standard is to provide the furniture upholstery industry with ignitability tests for composite materials used in upholstered seating, using gas flame ignition sources of greater severity than that given in AS 3744.2(ISO 8191-2) 3 APPLICATION This test method measures the ignitability of the overall composite of materials, i.e. cover(S), interliner, infill material and so on, as constructed on the test rig.
The results shall not be stated as being applicable to the general behaviour of any individual component (see Annex A to AS 3744.2).
4 APPLICATION TO FIRE HAZARD ASSESSMENT The results of tests to this specification, on their own, do not indicate the fire hazard of upholstered furniture under actual fire conditions, and consequently should not be applied to the assessment of fire hazard without taking into account additional supportive information.
Materials/products that are purported or believed to have a fire retarding treatment are subjected to these tests in the as-received condition. The durability of such treatment, with respect to the conditions of use and deterioration of fire properties, and its effect on combustion characteristics needs to be considered.(Refer to AS 3758).
6 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions given in AS 3744.2 apply.
7 CRITERIA OF IGNITION
The criteria of ignition for both progressive smouldering ignition and flaming ignition shall be in accordance AS 3744.2.
8 PRINCIPLE An assembly of upholstery materials is subjected to a flaming ignition source. The assembly is arranged to represent, in stylized form, a junction between a seat and seat back (or seat and arm)， such as might occur in a typical chair. The ignitability of an assembly is determined by applying a gas flame at the junction of the seat and seat back.
9 HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OPERATORS The requirements given in AS 3744.2 shall apply.
