AS 1774.4.3-1998 (R2013) pdf free.Refractories and refractory materials – Physical test methods – Part4.3:Preparation of test pieces – Unshaped refractories on site.
This Standard describes the procedure for the preparation of’ test blocks on site from all types of unshaped refractory materials.
NOTE: The values obtained from test pieces prepared using this method may not correspond with those obtained from test pieces of the same material prepared using test laboratory methods.
Where the physical dimensions of entry to the gunning site will not permit samples to be prepared adjacent to this site, the sample size may be adjusted.
NOTE: There is a growing practice of taking cored samples from cured installed lining. In such cases, the curing and drying requirements of this Standard are applicable.
3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions given in AS 2780 apply.
4 PRINCIPLE Test blocks of the unshaped refractory material being installed are prepared for subsequent testing to evaluate physical properties.
5 SAFETY This Standard may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This Standard does not purport to address the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Reference should be made to appropriate Standards, regulations, codes of practice. material safety data sheets and manufacturer’s installation instructions.
6 APPARATUS
6.1 Castable refractories
6.1.1 Moulds—capable of being dismantled and consisting of, or coated with, a material that is inert to the test sample.
NOTE: Only mould-release agents that preclude retention of air at the mould-castable interface should he used.
7 PROCEDURE
7.1 Casting Castable refractories (including low-cement casiables) are prepared as
follows: (See also AS 1774.4.1 and AS 1774.4.2.)
(a) Half-fill the mould compartment(s) from a batch of freshly mixed castable and, either by applying the same type of external or internal vibration as is being used on the job, or by using manual rodding methods, consolidate the castable in the mould. simulating the installation practice. Complete the filling operation while continuing to apply vibration or manual consolidation, ensuring that a slight overfill is achieved.
(b) Scrape off the overfill with a straight edge using a light sawing action. The surface should not be trowelled to obtain a sleek finish.
(c) Immediately after forming the test block, enclose or cover the mould with an impervious membrane to prevent water evaporation.
