8 GRADUATION AND NUMBERING
8.1 Graduation lines
The graduation lines shall be clean, permanent lines of uniform thickness not exceeding 0.15 times the linear separation of the adjacent graduation lines and shall lie in planes at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the measuring cylinder.
8.2 Spacing of graduation lines
There shall be no evident irregularity in the spacing of the graduation lines and the spacing shall be such as is consistent with the appearance of the graduated section of the cylinder as shown in Figure 1.
8.3 Length of graduation lines
The length of the graduation lines shall be as follows:
(a) Short lines
The length of the short lines shall be not less than 0.1 times and not more than 0.2 times the circumference of the measuring cylinder.
(b) Medium lines
The length of the medium lines shall be approximately 1.5 times the length of the short lines and shall extend symmetrically at each end beyond the extremities of the short lines.
8.4 Sequence of graduation lines
The sequence of the graduation lines shall be as follows:
(a) For 5, 50, 100 and 1000 inL measuring cylinders
Every 10th line shall be a long line; there shall be one medium line midway between successive long lines and there shall be four short lines between successive medium and long lines.
(b) For 10, 250 and 2000 i;iL measuring cylinders
Every fil’th line shall be a long line and there shall be four short lines between successive long lines.
(c) For 25 and 500 inL measuring cylinders
Every 10th line shall be a long line: there shall be four medium lines equally spaced between each long line: there shall be one short line between successive medium lines and between successive long and medium lines.
8.5 Position of graduation lines
The centres of the graduation lines shall form a vertical scale down the front of the cylinder when it is standing on a horizontal surface with the pouring lip, if fitted, to the left.
8.6 Number of graduation lines
The graduation lines shall be numbered from the bottom upwards, the lines being numbered as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Graduations shall be omitted from the bottom portion of the cylinders for a length corresponding to one-tenth, or approximately one-tenth, of the nominal capacity, as indicated by the capacity corresponding to the lowest graduation mark given in Table 1.AS 2163 pdf download.
