4 General
The fitting of an appliance and any modifications of a vehicle shall conform to manufacturer’s installation requirements.
NOTE 1 In Australia, where applicable, Australian Design Rules and Vehicle Standard Bulletins specify requirements for the fitting of an appliance and any modifications to a vehicle.
NOTE 2 The location of the appliance in or on the vehicle should be such that the appliance or any modification to the vehicle do not cause an imbalance of the vehicle that will adversely affect vehicle handling.
NOTE 3 The appliance should be installed on the near side of the vehicle or at the rear of the vehicle.
NOTE 4 For safety reasons the preferred location is the nearside of a vehicle. If a rear door is used, vehicle
ingress and egress should occur at off-street locations.
5 Types of appliances
Types of appliances shall be as classified in AS 3856.1.
6 Product requirements
Appliances shall conform to AS 3856.1.
7 Weight
The weight of the appliance shall not cause the legal axle loadings to be exceeded nor adversely affect the manoeuvrability, structural integrity, or the safe operation of the vehicle in which it is fitted.
8 Protrusion
No part of the installed and stored appliance shall extend laterally beyond the normal width (not including external rear vision mirrors) of the vehicle.
9 Padding and protective covering
Pinching movements, shear areas, or places where clothing or other objects could be caught or damaged shall be covered or in other ways protected to prevent injury when the appliance is in operation.
Rigid vehicle components inside the clear zones, as specified in AS/NZS ISO 10542.1, should be covered with padding.
NOTE FMVSS 201 and ECE R 21.11 specify requirements for impact performance of padding.
10 Protection against entrapment A fitted appliance shall be designed to prevent the entrapment of wheelchair parts, occupant or attendant, occurring between the appliance and the vehicle in which it is fitted, irrespective of the direction of entry to the vehicle of the wheelchair and the occupant.
