AS 3899:2002 pdf free.Higher rank coal and coke—Bulk density.
4.2.4 Procedure
The procedure shall be as follows:
(a) Weigh the clean, dry measuring box, to the nearest 50 g.
(b) For each determination, pour the prepared sample into a pile on a metal plate and, using the scoop, carefully flatten the pile to about 100 mm in thickness. (Do not put undue pressure on the coal with the back of the scoop.)
(c) Take successive scoopfuls from uniformly distributed points in the pile, and allow them to slide slowly from the scoop into the box at different points. This will minimize segregation and packing while the box is being filled. Ensure the drop height from the scoop to the surface of the coal in the measuring box is as small as possible. not exceeding 250 mm.
(d) Having overfilled the box, carefully slide the levelling bar across the top of the box in one pass, removing, by hand, any piece of coal that obstructs the passage of the levelling bar. Care shall be taken to prevent undue voids or compression of the sample while levelling.
(e) Carefully place the measuring box containing the coal on the platform and balance it. Weigh and record the mass to the nearest 50 g.
(f) After weighing the sample immediately determine total moisture in accordance with
AS 1038.1.
4.3 Measuring cylinder method
4.3. 1 Principle
The bulk density is calculated from the volume of a coal sample that has been dropped 150 times through a specified height in a measuring cylinder.
4.3.2 Sample
The minimum mass of sample for bulk density determined shall be 160 g (sufficient for four replicate determinations).
4.3.3 Apparatus
The following apparatus is required:
(a) Dropping box—as shown in Figure 1, screwed to a rigid bench or table. The pad at the base of the box shall have a hardness of 7 1 to 80 International Rubber Hardness Degrees.
(b) Measuring cylinder—glass, without a pouring lip and closed by a rubber stopper. The combined mass of cylinder and stopper shall be 250 ±5 g. The cylinder shall have its base ground flat and be graduated in 2 rnL divisions over the range 20 mL to 250 mL. The maximum permissible error of the graduation at any point shall be 1.5 mL. The length of the cylinder between the zero mark and the 250 mL graduation shall be between 200 mm and 260 mm.
The distance between the ground base of the cylinder and the rubber pad when the cylinder is raised to the permitted height shall be 25 ±2 mm. This can be achieved by suitably packing the underside of the shelf in the dropping box. The assembled apparatus is shown in Figure 2.AS 3899 pdf download.
