When installed on the rear of the vehicle, the colour bands of all strip plates shall be oriented to slope down and outward (away from the centre of the vehicle).

If two 100mm wide strip plates are installed with their longer edges horizontal, then the A and B plates are to be installed at the left and right side of the rear of the vehicle respectively. However, if these plates are installed with their longer edges vertical, then the A and B plates are to be at the right and left side of the rear of the vehicle respectively (refer to Figure 6.1).
A Category 615 plate shall only be installed with its longer edge horizontal.
6.2 AngIe
All plates should be installed at the near vertical angle. Where this is not possible they shall
be installed not exceeding 5° to the vertical.
6.3 Configurations
The minimum configuration for rear marker plates when fitted to a vehicle shall be one of the following:
(a) Category 33
A pair of Category 33 plates shall be located on the rear surface of the vehicle. Both plates shall be positioned at the same height, symmetrically about the longitudinal centre-line of the vehicle, as shown in Figure 6.3 [refer also to Clause 6.3(b)1.
For applicable vehicles (refer to Figure 6.3), a Category 31L or Category 33L plate shall be located on this surface at the left side of the rear of the vehicle above the Category 33 plate, or use a Category 34 plate [refer also to Clause 6.3(b)].
(b) Category 34
Category 34 plates shall be used in either of the following ways:
(i) A Category 34A plate shall be installed on the left side of the rear of a vehicle in conjunction with a corresponding Category 33 plate installed in the correct orientation at the right side of the rear of a vehicle (see Figure 6.2).
(ii) A Category 34B plate shall be installed on the right side of the rear of a vehicle and shall be in conjunction with a Category 34A plate installed at the left side of the rear of a vehicle.
Both plates shall be positioned symmetrically about the longitudinal centre-line of the vehicle and at the same height to the bottom of each plate, as shown in Figure 6.2.
(c) (‘ategories 161, 81 and 41
Where space limitations prevent the use of either of the above two configurations, 100 mm strip plates shall be used, other than for vehicles specified in Clause 6.3(d). Categories 41, 81 and 161 plates shall be located on the rear surface of the vehicle symmetrical about its longitudinal centre-line. These plates can be installed horizontally or vertically, but their configured pattern shall be symmetrical about the vertical longitudinal centre-line of the vehicle.AS 4001.2 pdf download.
