1.1 SCOPE This Standard sets out the requirements for the evaluation, design, and selection of office desks. It specifies minimum requirements for the function, strength durability and stability of office desks, leaving designers and manufacturers the maximum opportunity to develop suitable products.
The Standard covers freestanding desks such as single and double pedestal desks and extended desk units both adjustable and fixed height. It also includes tables intended for use as desks.
The Standard is applicable to desks used with VDU and associated equipment. It does not specify criteria for VDU equipment.
1.2 OBJECTIVE To provide purchasing authorities, specifiers, users, retailers and manufacturers with a Standard for office desks that specifies function, durability, stability and performance characteristics and enables use of these criteria to assist in selection and evaluation.

1.4 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard the definitions below apply.
1.4. 1 Desk-a grouping of furniture items and components, providing a horizontal or slightly inclined work surface or work surfaces, either fixed or adjustable in height, that facilitates the performance of tasks in an office-like environment.
1.4.2 Horizontal surface definitions
1.4.2.1 Primary surface-a surface which has the apparent potential for the highest loading or a surface on which a person may sit. In cases where more than one horizontal surface of a desk exists, there may be more than one primary surface.
1.4.2.2 Secondary surface-a surface used for storage (e.g. a shelf) or a dedicated surface located more than 762 mm above the floor.
1.4.2.3 Dedicated surface-a surface located at 762 mm or less from the floor which is occupied exclusively by the equipment placed on the surface.
1.4.2.4 Adjustable keyboard surface-a moveable surface which is occupied primarily by the keyboard.
1.4.3 Importer-the persons or corporate body assuming legal responsibility for the product under relevant State or Federal laws, if the product is not manufactured in Australia or New Zealand.
