This British Standard BS 6320 specifies requirements for modems and associated call-set-up equipment for connection at an NTTF or through an NTTP port to the British Telecommunications pub]ic switched telephone network (PSTN). The standard applies both to self-contained modems and also to modems incorporated within terminal equipment (integral modems) to provide intercommunication facilities over the PSTN.
The requirements are specified in order to provide correct interworking with the network, to minimize the risk of hazardous electrical conditions appearing on the network and to minimize the risk of conditions on the network creating hazards for persons using the modem.
The standard does not apply to external apparatus or software that is needed to produce conditions appropriate to any parameter of the modem under test.
This standard does not apply to apparatus approved under Section 16(2) of the British Telecommunications Act (1981) before this standard comes into effect. Neither does it apply to apparatus connected with the consent of British Telecommunications to any British Telecommunications network for development purposes or when under test.
2 Abbreviations and definitions
For the purposes of this British Standard the abbreviations and definitions given in BS 6301 and BS 6305 apply, together with the following:

a device or au arrangement of components which convert digital signals into analogue signals and/or vice versa for transmission and/or reception over the PSTN
3 Safety
3.1 Modems shall comply with the requirements of BS 6301:1982.
3.2 Where it is necessary to use a modem with a separate protection barrier or barriers betwe n the modem and an NTTP in order to satisfy the requirements of BS 6301, such a protection barrier or barriers shall comply with the requirements of BS 6301. In addition the modem shall be marked as specified in clause 6 of this standard and shall be provided with the information specified in clause 7 of this standard.
4 Interface with the PSTN
4.1 General. A modern shall comply wiLh the requirements of BS 6305:1982, except as specified in 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5 of this standard.
4.2 2-wire connection. The requirements of 3.2
