BS EN 17343 This document provides terms and definitions for rail networks and rail vehicles guided by track and wheels, both
made of steel and/or other materials. This includes heavy rail and urban rail systems. This document is applicable as a reference for future European Standards and the revision of existing standards and represents a set of general technical terms and definitions. This document does not apply to specific applications such as: -track construction and maintenance machines not travelling on rails; -road-rail machines when not travelling on rails; 一 magnetic levitation transport networks and vehicles; -guided busways and guided busses; -non-public rail networks and vehicles, eg. mine rail systems; -rail networks and vehicles exclusively for leisure, historical and tourist purposes, e.g. mountain-, field-, park-, cable rail systems, funiculars and theme park rides; -trolley busses. Not in the scope are terms and definitions related to: -control command and signalling, 一operation, – – geographical aspects.2 Normative references

IS0 and IEC maintain terminological databases for use in standardization at the following addresses: ●IEC Electropedia: available at http://www.electropedia.org/ ●ISO Online browsing platform: available at https://www.iso.rg/obp These are presented in English, French and German. In some cases, figures support the definitions. The symbols used are explained in Table 1. rail system rail network, related rolling stock, and the associated operation Note 1 to entry: Operation means the procedures and ogistics permitting the operation of the rall system. Note 2 to entry: Rail networks may have sections of rack railway without being regarded as another or separate rail network. 3.1.1 conventional rail system rail system in which rolling stock is supported and guided by steel wheels on two steel rails, located beneath the rolling stock, regardless of their design speed and track gauge Note 1 to entry: The term “traditional” or “classc” rail system is also used. Note 2 to entry: The term ‘conventional’ had a different meaning before the integration of the relevant ‘Technical Specifications on Interoperability’ (TSI). The meaning is not followed in this standard. BS EN 17343 pdf download.
